Hi!

I am asking this for a friend & a bf support group co-leader.

She went through the archives herself earlier (about blood
imcompatibilites), but asked me to ask if someone might have any words of
wisdom to her - advice, hints, facts, one's own experience to share, etc.

This is her 4th baby, baby is now 4 days old. Birth was ok, baby was fine
after birth, alert and suckled, but baby was tested Coombs pos., and they
wanted to keep them at the hospital over the weekend "just in case".

Baby is sleepy the first day, mother expresses and cupfeeds. Milk comes
in. On Sat (day 2) baby still gets only 0 - 5 ml per feed, mother starts
to express more and gives the EBM via a small syringe (baby is sleepy and
cupfeeding sufficient amouths difficult/impossible). She keeps strict
record that baby gets enough milk.

On Sat (or Sun) baby (day 2 or 3) baby's bili is tested high, and she goes
under a bili light. By now (day 4) bili is getting lower nicely. They say
baby doesn't have a haemolytic disease. (Three of her previous children
got jaundiced.)

Mom breastfeeds the baby, and at the same time feeds the baby EBM via a
syringe. One feed takes about two hours, then one hour rest, and another
2-hour feed.

Mom says baby is still sleepy, and her main problem is that the baby only
"seems to suckle" at the breast. She swallows and/or licks the milk that
is easily available (MER, syringe), but otherwise her suckling is too weak
and like non-nutritive suckling.

She knows herself a lot and has tried many things already, and has been in
contact both with me and a bf councellor (sorry I can't specify every
detail), but if you should have any ideas to share with her, she would be
most happy :) .

TIA
