I realize instructors are not necessarily responsible for the course
content, but a number of nursing students were talking about their Maternal
exam held today. We're all in microbiology together). One of the questions
they were explaining to a classmate (who missed the question) was:

You have a newborn diagnosed with thrush. Do you...

The "correct" answer was: feed the baby with formula until the infection
clears up, and have the mother p/d until off the medications.

Trying not to scream, I explained the correct procedures for a mother/baby
with thrush, and that there was absolutely no reason to p/d. Went on to
explain that very few medications indeed required any weaning at all.

They listened patiently, and explained that their nursing instructor was an
RN IBCLC, so she knew what she was talking about.

If this is the information student nurses are getting, from an RN IBCLC, no
less, there is so little hope for this community!

I was thankful to wait until after my exam to have a fit...

Best wishes,
Sam Doak
"only" an LPN IBCLC
