Hello,

Twenty Four of you responded to my request for non-RN wages info -
thank you!!

The average salary was $25.81 per hour. Of course, there was a wide
range - from $18 per hour to $36.77 per hour. Non-Rns on the East and
West Coast regions (i.e. New York and California, and one Oregon LC)
made the highest salaries, over $30 per hour. The vast majority were in
the average salary range of $25.81.

I still think it is a shame the non-RNs with much experience are paid
$10 per hour less than their RN peers. After all, the LC profession was
birthed from Non-RNs in LLLI and other outside interest groups. I don't
know what can be done about this discrepancy - to me it seems that
future LCs will be soughtout only if they have RN after their names
rather than based upon the skills they possess. In Phoenix, AZ, we just
had a fast-track lactation course taught for several WIC staff, and one
of the participants told me that she was told she would never be hired
in a hospital unless she was an RN.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post!

Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
