Lisa asks for help with justifying IBCLC's in the WIC program. I know
you won't get this in time, Lisa, but, maybe it'll help anyway. The one
thing we here in Indiana do have going for us is a WIC breastfeeding
director who has made tremendous strides for breastfeeding in the WIC
program in our state, including getting IBCLC's in every regional office
and becoming one herself! Because WIC nationally is under the DHHS
umbrella, according to her, there is a strong push at the federal level
to beef up breastfeeding support. In fact, she told us a few months
ago, that breastfeeding support has been made one of the primary health
goals for the WIC program for this year! How does that square with what
your director is trying to do??? I would be happy to put you in touch
with this lady and I'm sure she wouldn't mind. She is a mover and
shaker in our state for breastfeeding! We expect nothing but good in
the future as a lot of things are coming together, the ad campaign
(albeit watered down. Still, it is quite eye-catching!) and the WIC
breastfeeding push being two of them. Let me know if you would like
contact information.
Marsha
