Maybe it is my naiveté but ... would we give a sucrose pacifier to
anyone else at the hospital for pain relief??? If not, then why use it
on a baby? I keep thinking about the not too distant past when it was
accepted practice to perform surgery, including open heart surgery, on
infants using NO PAIN RELIEF because folks thought babies didn't feel
pain like the rest of us on the planet. I personally would be PO'd if
someone gave me a sucrose pacifier for pain relief and I suspect would
be better able than an infant to register my complaints.

I would be willing to bet that no where else in your hospital are a
person's attitude and personal beliefs allowed to take precedence over
facts and research. This is the tactic I had to employ with the local
school district concerning teen moms' right to have time to BF their
infants without teachers, counselors, and other staff moralizing to them
in front of the class. I had to load both barrels of my advocate gun
with research, research, research.

As I have said, the dorsal penile nerve block is the standard of care for
pain relief in newborn circumcision. However, not all docs have been
trained in, or are willing to learn, this procedure. Rather than give no
pain relief at all, one can easily give sucrose -- which causes release of
endogenous endorphins. You might want to read our study, which I cited
recently.
