Hi Kim,
That line you are describing is a compression stripe.  It means that the
baby is using too much positive pressure on the nipple, usually because
he is not latching deeply enough.  Try an asymmetrical latch:  have mom
hold baby with his head slightly extended, and place his lower lip on
the areola about a half inch away from the nipple , then wait for baby
to open wide and pull him in from his shoulders, so that he gets more
breast in the lower part of his mouth than the upper.  Make sure she
does not pull him "up and over" so that his lower lip slides up to the
base of the nipple as she latches him on.  You can check the archives, I
