A few leads for you Liz,

Nils Bergman (the Kangaroo Mother Care man) says this. He is thinking also
looking at investigating just what someone else suggested- whether babies
placed on the chest of strangers (in the case of babies being adopted- the
adoptive parents are certainly strangers to the baby)- respond in the same
way as babies with their mothers.

There is a lot written about this in relation to adoption. The whole primal
wound thing etc. I don't think there is much that you could describe as
standard research type information but there is certainly evidence that
removal of a child from it's mother is a drastic event.
