If you feel the need to lighten up a little in our discussion of choices women make between breast and bottle, check this site.
Valerie, do you really think missing the experience of breastfeeding is only comparable to a celibate marriage? That is too black/white for me. What about adoptive mothers? What about people married to partners with spinal cord injuries which make them numb and/or paralyzed from the waist down?
We are humans. Humans are mammals. Humans are mammals with complex brains and the capacity to believe in abstract notions of deities. We are capable of loving, and of mothering, without always, in every case, experiencing contact between erectile tissue and mucous membranes in us and our objects of affection.
Norwegian feminists regard breastfeeding as a way to empowerment. Many prominent Norwegian women have publicized the breastfeeding relationships which have coincided with other important aspects of their lives, such as being cabinet members in the government or medical residents (which Gro Harlem Brundtland wrote about in the first part of her autobiography). It DOES make a difference to have societal protection for breastfeeding-- no direct advertising, right to maternity leave and breastfeeding breaks, acceptance (at least on paper) of women's right to participate in social/cultural/political life as equals to men... I could go on and on... but go read about "The Thing" instead and have a laugh or two on me.

snowbound in Kristiansand, Norway because the snow tires are under the windsurfer at the back of the garage and the muscular part of the marriage is away until tomorrow!
