Jan wrote about a child who was "going to be a high maintenance child in
any case, and then turn out to be one of those incredibly busy, bright,
and creative children."
It all depends, though. Once they can cut paper by themselves, and (oh
joy) read, I find these ones require far less maintenance than any other
kind... but then, the only "other kind" one I've ever had is only 1.5
yrs. And anyway, I've figured out that I'm a high-maintenance mother,
which might explain why the "sitting still to breastfeed" phase was
harder for me than the "chase around until bedtime snuggly" phase. The
child who screamed the loudest is now one of the easiest and most
delightful seven-year-olds I've ever had the pleasure of spending time
with. (Those who know us, don't you agree?)
