I'm  thinking maybe liability is more likely the issue. Perhaps Medela got 
wind of  a law suit or their risk management folks are like ours, lol...When 
we first  started renting/selling breast pumps our lawyers were concerned 
that someone  might drop one in the bathtub and electrocute themselves! they 
wanted to make  sure that the fine print covered that possibility.

If  Medela was really concerned about liability, it would seem helpful  if 
they focused on making their personal use pumps closed systems, and prevent  
black mold from growing in the motors even if they are well cleaned. The 
new  instructions sound like a way to shift blame from a design flaw they have 
been  made well aware of, that other companies don't have, to the already  
hard-working pumping moms themselves.
