I wonder if it would help for you to talk to her about her nursling's
behaviour, nursing style, etc. I would suggest that for two reasons. One
is that you might get some more clues to the puzzle of what is going on
(my hunch is that it could be the fear of pain is making her put off
feedings, rather than hesitate to latch, but then I never could master
the rapid arm movement necessary; it could also be a reluctant nurser or
a tense-to-intense one) and the other is that when mothers are encourged
to talk about their babies they tend to see the whole situation in a
more positive way. You can just smile and provide positive feedback
about how well she knows her baby.
When there are challenges in the breastfeeding relationship, it is easy
to feel incompetent. She probably feels she isn't picking up on the
cues, properly.
There are lots of stories about different nursing styles in the Womanly
Art of Breastfeeding and in Jack Newman's book.
