I too had an extremely high needs baby who was extremely bright. Nursed for
over 2 years. But grew up to be a troubled man. I think he is bi-polar,
however he has chosen to self medicate with alcohol and other drugs :-( He
doesn't believe in "shrinks." He is very opinionated. After all these
years I can follow his up and down patterns with a calendar and predict
where he is at at most times :-( From my mom's descriptions I believe my
grandfather was also bi-polar. My sister is also and I am chronically
depressed. Among my mother's generation I can't identify anyone as
bi-polar - one aunt as depressed tho. Have one grandchild that I'm
suspicious about - Oppositional defiant for sure.

Wouldn't it make an interesting study to find out what sort of (babies,
children) people were that are dx "high needs." I think if they were bottle
fed, people might not be in tune with what is going on as a breastfeeding
mom. I'm also sure that many on the list can tell us about their high need
child who has grown up to be a bright go-getter who is quite successful.
Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
