I would prefer that the mother does it herself, but often work "hands on"
in
the first 24-48 hours while mom has her baby skin-to-skin. I zap off the
drops with a small syringe so that no drops are lost and the amount looks
huge compared to a little at the bottom of a cup. With our high Caesarean
and epidural rate, I see many disorganised babies. They will be given
formula if their blood sugar drops, so I try and get colostrum into them by
any means! Combined with some skin-to-skin time, a swallow of colostrum
often gets them to the breast.
