Medela's issue with used pumps is the theoretical risk of cross
contamination. However, since as far as I know there is not evidence that
anyone has ever actually been cross contaminated, this seems mostly to be a
litigation protection on their part. That's not saying there's no risk --
only that its a level of risk many of us might find acceptable in other
context (eg, crossing busy streets!).

However, I have worked with several mother who were feeding their babies
formula while mom was at work because they "just couldn't get any milk with
the very best pump" who have told me afterward that they were pumping with
2nd (or 3rd!) hand PNS pumps. Some of these pumps have been used by
several moms, over several lactations, for years, cumulatively.

All of us who have used pumps for long times know that the moving parts wear
out, and the pumps become less effective. It's my understanding that in
the PNS those part are inaccessible -- that is, not replaceable. So when
they get old, the pump is less effective.

But the mom who tried "with a very expensive pump that my friend gave me"
usually thinks that what is less effective is her breasts...
