You can catch toxoplasmosis anytime.  You can get it from handling litter
of cats carrying the disease and undercooked meat.  The disease is at worst
like a mild flu or cold and is quite often not even noticeable but is
devastating if contracted during PREGNANCY AT A PARTICULAR STAGE OF
GESTATION.   During pregnancy, either have someone else change the litter
box or use gloves.  You could have the cat tested to see if it carries
toxoplasmosis if you want to bear that expense.

With my fifth child, I asked the doctor to order a TORCH blood screen
because I was interested in whether I was positive for toxoplasmosis since
I have had cats for ages and like my meat in the rare to medium rare state.
 Sure enough, yes, I had antibodies (along with being CMV positive as well
which I already knew from being a blood donor).  Even with this knowledge,
I STILL used gloves to change the litter box during pregnancy.
