Better late than never, but jumping into this thread about weight gain
during pregnancy and subsequent lactation performance. Rachel, your figures
are impressive (excuse the pun). Mine would be another case history to
refute the conclusions reached. I am 5'9". My pre-pregnant weight before
my first baby was 125lb and I gained a phenomenal 58 lb, weighing 183 lb
when he was born (a gain of 46% body weight). My husband was away in the
army a lot and each time he came home he couldn't believe his eyes! My son
was born by C/sec because of disproportion, and was kept in the nursery for
24 hours so we got off to a poor start, but we breastfed just fine. After
his birth I could hardly eat, it was just like being in love, and I lost
nearly all the weight within 3 months.

Five years later we had surprise twins (I found out on waking from the
second C/sec). I started out at 134 lb and ended up at the same weight
exactly, 183 lb (a gain of 36% body weight). Once again, we breastfed
easily - this time though it took about 5 years to lose the weight
afterwards even though both babies BF every 90 minutes round the clock,
almost for that long! (Actually they still eat in this pattern, 18 years
later!)

Anyway, if Rachel and I are anything to go by, there are some problems with
the latest study.
