Susan,
You don't offend me at all. I really like my job less and less, not due to
the breastfeeding work, but fighting the barriers of medicalization
*constantly* (burnout). I guess many of us on the list, or at least many of
us who post frequently, work in a medical facility. I hope the public health
sector can facilitate a change towards more and longer breastfeeding and
exclusive breastfeeding thru public health policy etc. Locally, the only
real presence I see in my day to day life as far as public health is the
local WIC program, which in my humble opinion is underachieving at
breastfeeding promotion in my area. (I understand great strides have been
made in other states). It does not seem the medical sector is making much of
a dent. When I decided to pursue lactation via graduate education it made
sense to enter an MPH program in nutrition or maternal/child. The cost was
too prohibitive where it was offered (a private college) so I decided to go
for the master's in nursing at the public college. I think that was a
mistake. Nurses, this is not a flame against nurses, I just can't get much
accomplished as a mostly powerless nurse.
