From a recent study:
<< Epperson said her advice to women who are thinking of breastfeeding
and taking an antidepressant is to weigh a range of factors, including the
severity of the postpartum depression, their response to the antidepressant,
and their commitment to breastfeeding. >>

Hmm, first of all it's great researchers are beginning to look at this, since
it has become such an important and common ( at least where I live) scenario.
Eleven babies is a beginning, it would be nice to see findings with more
babies. With the attitude of some physicians, maybe they could only find eleven
moms who got enough support for breastfeeding while taking the medication.
Although I can agree that severity of the event and drug response are important in
trying to do a risk assessment, the phrase "commitment to breastfeeding"
doesn't sit well with me. Often the mothers would be very committed, but they need
MDs who are also committed, and willing to evaluate the situation from the
starting point that breastfeeding is a critical human norm. Articles like this
would need to state that categorically to get that message out there among
clinicians, I think.
Thanks for sharing the article, Linda. It's a good start.
