Esther, perhaps you are thinking of quotes from Dr Neil Campbell, a
neonatologist from Melbourne. He looks after very sick babies and considers
breastfeeding to be as important or more-so than all the technological
stuff in NICU. He firmly believes that breastfeeding reduces pain and
therefore reduces the need for morphine in very ill babies, and in this
way, reduces the suppression of respiration that morphine apparently can
cause. (I think I have that right - I'm not an expert on this.) Of course,
the comfort derived from the act of breastfeeding also helps the baby (and
the mother!) cope.
