I work for the Wic program in NH. We have a small program, but have
managed to purchase 8 electic pumps, which we loan out to our moms who have
sick children, are sick themselves, or are returning to school or work.
Each mom signs a release from us stating that they will not hold us liable
for any personal damage (???) inflicted by the pump, that they will take
care of it, keeping it both clean and operational, and that they will return
it to the program when they no,longer need it or if the program requests its
return due to a lack of pumps and a higher-need mom. On this form is the
date that the pump is loaned and a date that the pump is due back. This is
always one month from the date of the loan. This does not mean we expect
the pump back in one month, it means that each month we must contact the mom
to renew the contract. This ensures contact and gives perfect opportunity
to share info. and make sure eveything is going well for both mother and baby.
However, personally I take a good deal of time when giving out the
pumps. I explain how the pumps work, sanitation issues, storing issues,
feeding issues, health issues. These are a lot of issues. I always leave
handouts to reinforce what I've said and also leave my phone number and
encourage moms to call for ANY reason.
I often will check up on these moms after 1 week and two weeks,
though after that I usually stick to once a month--they usually have the
knack of pumping, and their own personal plan to meet their needs.
