I too received a message about Borders' plans to train their employees. I
sent them the following message in reponse and got a personal reply.

"I appreciate your response. Education is the only way to prevent
discrimination. Your effort to educate your employees is commendable. I
would like to suggest that you demonstrate your commitment to women and
children by initiating and sponsoring a public education campaign that
supports breastfeeding and a woman's right to feed her child any place that
it is legal for them to otherwise be.

Breastfeeing is a normal activity that provides optimal nutrition and
nurturance (C. Everett Koop). It is recommended for a minimum of one year.
(American Academy of Pediatrics, December 1997, Policy Statement on The Use
of Human Milk). It would benefit everyone to understand this. Sponsoring a
public awareness campaign that educates about breastfeeding would go a long
way to address the ignorance that your employee displayed. It would also
demonstrate your support of women and children. Lastly, it would
demonstrate that your company accepts responsibility for your employee's
mistake and your commitment to correcting it."
