I will take a look at the article Bev Walker references, to see how authors
are supporting their claim that alcoholics recover once they are presented
with information about how damaging drinking is. Permit me to say that I
doubt it. Would that addictive behavior were so easily changed!  As I have
written before, humans make many decisions based on how they feel rather
than how they think.  We are often driven by woundedness, compulsion, and
self-destructive impulses which we cannot control.  Information is good, and
I am all for presenting people with a full slate of facts to digest.  The
basically well-adjusted folks may indeed be swayed and converted by data.
It is much harder for the addicted or the neurotic to change behavior merely
by being the recipients of good teaching.  This relates to breastfeeding
because breastfeeding takes place within the sphere of a woman's
relationships.  Some women are not emotionally healthy, some of their
relationships are not healthy, and some families are extremely
dysfunctional.  I believe that lactation consulting contains a huge element
of counseling skills, that these skills need to be grounded in family
systems theory.
