Also, she was probably under "orders" from her mother-in-law to give
preference to the male twin.  This happens whether children are twins or
not, and even when all are breastfed -- extra food goes to the male
children, medical care goes to the male children, educational opportunities
go to the male children.  The US is more subtle in its preference for male
children, but the underlying attitudes are much the same.
