Dear Lactnetters -A close friend and group mom in my LLL group has a two week
old baby girl who seems to be somewhat tongue tied. There is a clicking
noise and baby has to reattach at times. This is baby number 5 and mom is a
pro at positioning so baby is doing OK weightwise but probably having to work
harder at nursing than she otherwise might. Nightime nursing is especially
hard -- getting positioning just right when mom and babe are half asleep.
Mom has seen a LC and been referred to a pediatric dentist who does this
procedure (frenotomy) in his office and is well thought of. Before she goes
ahead and gets his opinion (he will do the procedure right away if he feels
it is indicated) she just wanted me to ask for your opinions and experience.
What are the pros and cons of this procedure? Is it better to have it done
right away or wait a few weeks and see if the breastfeeding problems will
resolve themselves. If the procedure is done by a competent person is there
any downside? Does it cause speech difficulties later? Please reply to my
private e-mail as well as to the list if you like. Thanks for giving us the
benefit of your wisdom and experience.
