Dear Lacnetters,

You have been very helpfull with my previous posts. Contact with this group
is greatly improving the quality of service I can offer my clients.
My most recent dilema involves a 7 month old baby with a heart condition who
is only 11.5lbs. She is terribley underweight because she has a very weak
suckle and comes off the breast after only 5 minutes or so, not wanting to
try again for another 3 hrs. I've just met with the mom and suggested
supplementing for now until her milk supply increases. I will try to get
her an SNS (supplemental nursing system) to use by our next visit. Baby is
very weak and anemic. She was thinking of weaning all together and
switching to ABM, but baby didn't want the bottle (smart baby). I convinced
her not to wean, that it would be much better for her baby's system to have
more breastmilk and supplemental ABM until then. She claims her baby was
tested and is lactose intolerant (according to her pediatrition). I said
she was probably sensitive to cows milk protein, not lactose, but she
insists it's the lactose she is intolerant to. Can anyone tell me, is
breastmilk not full of lactose? I've had many clients lately telling me
their doctors have told them their babies are lactose intolerent & SOY ABM
is the only choice. Maybe the lactose in cows milk is what they are
sensitive to. Is it different? I am reccomending more frequent nursing
with breast compression and use of the SNS until the baby's weight begins to
go up.(with what ABM I don't know - I will leave that up to the Mom) Baby
needs heart surgery, but the surgeon won't touch her until she is 15lbs.
Thats the goal for now. Thanks in advance for your info on lactose and why
so many babies are being diagnosed as lactose intolerent.
