Dear Micky,
You have misread the Breastfeeding Answer Book. You stated baby's
weight as 7 lbs 9oz at discharge and 7lbs 11 oz at 2 weeks. You then say, "That
would put the lowest weight at 7lbs 9oz and the baby was back up to that and
2 more by two weeks."
The lowest weight _is_ the lowest weight! Baby can't be "back up to
it." Baby's weight gain needs to be measured from the lowest weight, not birth
weight. But in this case, baby has only gained 2 oz in 2 weeks--definitely
not sufficient!
Although baby is having 5-6 stools every 24 hours, the quality of the
stools also needs to be assessed. I have seen numerous babies who have "lots"
of stools, but the stools have few to no curds--basically just yellow water!
This can happen when baby doesn't get enough cream/hindmilk. I'd suggest
investigating if baby is filling up on only foremilk because mom has too much
milk (you mention baby gulping and choking). I'd also investigate if baby's
suck is ineffective--baby may be able to get that initial let-down going, and
it may be very fast, but then baby's suck may not be effective enough to get
the slower creamier hindmilk, which doesn't come with that initial letdown
and is very dependent on baby's abilities.
