As I muse about the ad...I think, how about an ad like this, regarding breastfeeding? If we are going to use guilt, and feel good about it because we are sure we know what is right and best for babies, why not use guilt where the research is clear and the choice is often made to choose other than what is best for babies? (reference is the City of Baltimore billboard that says " We found him in the middle of our bed, dead. Sleep Safe. Alone. Back. Crib.No exceptions."

For all those health care professionals who like to guilt parents into doing things, how about this? (ah, but this kind of guilt wouldn't be ok, because it is not THEIR priority, right?)

Here's the ad.

" We found him, in the middle of the crib, coughing and turning blue from an asthma attack, or (insert illness here), shaking from a hypoglycemic attack (he has diabetes, which could have been prevented by breastfeeding,), or ..

He had NEC from not breastfeeding in the NICU, and now he'll never be the same....or
We found him, in the middle of the crib, suffering from anxiety from being away from his parents. He'll suffer the consequences of parental neglect for the rest of his life, and we could have prevented it.

Feed Safe. With Mom. No bottles. AT mom's breast. No exceptions."

That is also rude, and disrespectful, and scary....but it seems to be the MO here. Why can't we speak the truth about formula? Why scare the hell out of mothers and fathers who like to rest with their babies, if they do not have the risk factors of obesity, drug use, smoking?

What the heck is going on with this, and why is guilt selectively blessed?
