Kathy Lilleskov has contributed further concerns about the wearable pump,
i.e. that they are expensive. She wrote: "women are paying MORE money for a
substandard pump". (I wonder if the higher price makes them feel the product
must be "better", which is how some cosmetics are marketed?)
Some suggestions:
1) It seems to me that mothers who are let down (pun accidental!) by these
pumps need to be actively encouraged to file reports with the FDA. That's
better than if they just gave up or if they went to the expense of buying
other mechanical devices. If enough women file complaints, there is a better
chance that the issue of a problematic pump design will be addressed.
2) Let's use the *correct language*, everyone. Pumping and giving milk by
some other means, such as a bottle or sippy cup, is NOT "breastfeeding" It
is "breastmilk feeding" (BMF). Manufacturers are inaccurate in their
marketing messages about helping women to "breastfeed" - they are helping
mothers to BMF. We don't have to reflect or copy their misuse of terms. BMF
provides the milk, only. Breastfeeding is about more than the milk - i.e. it
is about the milk AND the complex physiological interactions associated with
how the milk is given.
When I was a young mother, older people would muse "ah, the closeness" when
discussing breastfeeding. They weren't talking about just the milk, but the
whole package that was meant by "breastfeeding".
**To recap**: please, to protect future mothers from being let down by
faulty products, file complaints about any product that is regularly causing
problems, whether to breast tissue or the supply. Regulating authorities can
only act if they receive complaints.
