Here in South FL, there are several very large antique and collectibles
shows/sales every year. One was held this weekend, and I shopped around for a
couple of hours.
I collect "nursing mothers art", and you all might be surprised how few
vendors really didn't understand what I meant by "do you have anything that
depicts a nursing mother?"! Maybe you wouldn't be surprised...
What I found interesting was that the items that I found (a very good day
today!) all depicted women of color. Must have been very scandalous in the
"old days" to show a "white" woman feeding her babe at the breast. I found
two postcards, one from Madagascar, the other in French from ?, the woman is
wearing traditional headress of cloth but I can't figure out the origin. Also
a stereopticon card with two African American women (c. 1920s) nursing older
babes, and two other young children at their feet. It seems as if the women
might have been wet nurses, because they do appear to be in their fifties or
late forties (could be wrong there, but it makes sense that babes would have
been wet nursed when mom was working out in the cotton fields). The title is
"Down in Dixie".
My fourth find today was a small metallic tray depicting a Native American
woman nursing an older child (maybe two years old) from the St. Louis World's
Fair 1904. It reads: "Warm Meals Served All Day"!

If anyone going to Boca in July is interested in collectibles, and is making
a long vacation out of the trip to south FL, there is a Collectibles and
Antiques Fair the weekend prior to the ILCA conference. Just FYI. There was
a lovely Edna Hibel and an 8" ceramic statuette of nursing mothers, but out of
my (cheap) price range.
