"First, we don't actually have to--it isn't "life or death" (at the moment,
anyway) and the baby can always be fed something in some other way."

This reminded me of a mom whose baby was not latching on - so she did what
people in her village have done for centuries - she found a cousin who was
breastfeeding a 3 month old, and, with some excellent let-downs that
initiated the suck-swallow rhythm, and a well-formed rather than flattened
nipple (due to engorgement) he latched on well there and nursed his fill.
Then she took the 3 month old and put him to her breast (very engorged,
flattened nipple) he softened the nipple, got things going. The next feed,
her own baby latched on well.

By the time I got to the home, I was just offering support (and holding my
breath with fear of thrush, Hep B, etc. etc....), but the baby HAD been
fed, the milk supply had been protected, and the new baby had learned how
to nurse!
