Hi! Relatively new subscriber here and technologically impaired so hope I'm
doing this right! I'm a non-practicing Physician Assistant, mother of 4
long-term breastfed children, LLL Leader (on reserve), Lamaze educator, IBCLC
and active duty Navy wife. I had recurring plugged ducts (and several cases
of mastitis) with my second child as someone was inquiring about recently,
and began to wonder if it was because of my sleeping/nursing positions.
While co-sleeping with my daughter, for example, lying on my left side, I
would routinely offer the left breast first and then offer the right breast
while still lying on the left side without rolling over and placing her to my
right, which I'm sure many moms do to conserve sleep. I began to think that
perhaps if I would roll over with her, the plugged ducts would subside as
that left breast would no longer be compressed as much during a feeding
session (which was several times a night). This child is now 14 and I have
to admit that I don't recall specifically the results of my "experiment" but
do know that the plugged ducts did subside at some point and she continued to
nurse for several years. Also, I don't recall having mastitis,
interestingly, with babies number 3 and 4. But I also must confess that I
have selective memory, because as my dh has said, there's a direct connection
between the breast and the brain and a good many of my brain cells have been
sucked out! (Does that also mean that my children are smarter for that?!)
Hello to all my Lactnet friends in San Diego and Washington, D.C.!
