Dan and Eliz went to the ped after lunch on Friday to see what he had to say and get the baby weighed on a *proper* scale. (The midwives at the
birthing center only had a dangling *fish* scale.)

When they arrived, they explained the problem, and the doc asked them
to undress the baby and put him on the scale. The moment he was put
down he exploded...pooped over everything in sight! You can imagine
how they laughed and laughed, and congratulated the doc on his *cure*!
Then he was weighed - he had gained 5oz in 4 days, which is very
respectable.

When they arrived home again, the baby nursed like there was no
tomorrow, zooming in and suckling strongly for the WHOLE nursing, and
he has continued to do that all afternoon and evening. Eliz's mother
said it was like he had been uncorked! LOL We shall be keeping a close
eye on him in the coming weeks, but right now all is fine. Yesterday (Saturday) he pooped twice, sizeable amounts, and he is now suckling very strongly all through his nursings :)

I would like to thank you all for your ideas and sugestions - as would Dan and Eliz. We are overwhelmed that so many people care enough to help :) It was very interesting (for me) to see the variety of responses, ranging from *Relax, everything is fine!* to *Boy, I would be worried too, just look at all these red flags!*

I kept saying to myself. *LOOK AT THE BABY!* and when I did, he showed no signs of dehydration or jaundice, but was bright-eyed and smiley. Having the weight checked was such a relief!

I have another question,a little off-topic, but please bear with me...
The doctor wrote us a prescription for Emla cream, a local anesthetic to be used an hour before the bris (this afternoon.) The pharmacist told us it was unavailable until next November because the manufacturers were being workig on designing a child-proof cap as required by Federal regulations. He offered to find us a proprietory substitute, at $70 a tube!Whew! We called the hospital to see if they could give us soe of theirs - no go. The nursery nurse suggested we call a local compounding pharmacy to make us up a small amount froma doc's prescription, which is what we finally did. Does anyone have any other information about this?

warmly, a much relieved norma
