As I have mentioned before, I am an 8th grade teacher. The school in
which I teach has a "partner" relationship with Abbott Labs, a local
employer. The Abbott in town here makes IV bags & lines (I think),
noty infant formula, but they are still part of the Abbot-Ross
conglomerate megolithic multinational multisyllabic thing. ;)

Anyway, Abbott & my school are co-sponsoring a contest for a March of
Dines Walk For Babies. The kids are to bring in change and put it in
these huge containers in the cafeteria. The kids are competing grade
level against grade level.

Guess what the containers are? Huge BOTTLES. I walked into the
cafeteria today and nearly toppled over.

I tried speaking with the teacher coordinating this-- she thought I
was being silly. My main point was that the March of Dimes promotes
healthy babies, and bottles are not a *normal* part of a healthy
baby's *normal* life. (Something like that, anyway-- I know it's not
very eloquent.) She refused to remove them. I tried approaching the
principal, who herself has a 10 m.o. artificially fed baby-- she was
totally unsupportive.

It really bothers me to have these giant plastic bottles as symbols of
something that is intended to *help* babies. Anyone have any
suggestions or resources I can use to perhaps persuade these people to
just put pickle jars up there and ditch the bottles?

Teresa G. in NC (who knows this isn't earth-shattering, but hates the
thought of my students even temporarily associating bottles with
something "good" for babies...)
