Lisa: I'm very glad that you haven't seen an increase in candida, but that
is not what I have seen. From the albeit skewed samples that we both have,
I'd have to say my experience is completely the opposite. Controlling for
various pertinent factors--I have been able to calculate a 400% or four
fold increase in the rates of breast-yeast or nipple thrush in moms who
were treated during labor for beta strep. This rate is significantly
higher than the rate I have for prophylactic antibiotics used during
c-sections. The only way I can explain this is that the hospitals included
in this have used continuous, IV drip of antibiotics throughout labor and
the mean duration for the group was 13 hours. This is not a small amount
of antibiotic. Is it possible that you are not seeing the moms in the two
to three week postpartum period where yeast seems likely to manefest?
These findings are not published as of yet. As a consultant to various
public health agencies I am bound to collect data for at least six months
more before formally releasing this information. Please take this as a
preliminary report.
Chris
