I often use the word, 'normal' when teaching parents. For example when a
mother is supplementing with formula for some reason, I explain that when we
are doing anything artificial, we aim to mimic normal. Then discuss appropriate
volume.

When I round on a mother for the first time and things are not going so well
and everyone is concerned that sweet baby has not eaten in XX# of hours, I
discuss taking everything back to normal. We discuss what normally happens
after delivery and compare it to what has actually happened to her baby.
Then I often suggest we go back to normal and see what happens. Baby is
placed skin to skin and covered. Most often baby will arouse when his state is
reorganized and he nurses well. If that does not happen, we can revisit
mimicing normal by doing whatever needs to be done to keep baby fed and
mom's milk protected.

I love to use the term, 'normal' to keep reminding everyone that what we see
everyday and so think is normal is really just typical or usual here, but it is not
normal to human biology. Sometimes babies just need a bit of normal.
