I feel it is a stupid shame that so many local hospitals put in "lactation"
clinics with pump rentals (never with full 7 day a week -- 24 hour coverage)
== in our area and were told that they could not refer out that almost all
the private practice providers (IBCLC;s) with years of experience are now out
business -- and that these clinics if they charged --- charged such low rates
that the private practice consultants could not meet the prices. Plus the PNS
is sold at every big baby store in my area and local hospital who rent pumps
-- and moms are not told when it is the proper pump to use and when it is not
(Then the moms call me to save their milk supply 2 months after the fact)

Now since the economy has turned sour and the hospital clinics were not
charging enough to meet the bottom line -- most are closing or having very
limited hours and so there is virtually no more IBCLC out there on my side of
town to serve moms -- I am sure the local LLL is getting tons of calls.

One thing everyone should know is that on the Medela 1-800-TELL YOU line --
when a Mom brings up a Breastfeeding specialist under her zip code they do
not need to be certified in anyway to be listed -- just either pay for the
listing or be attached in someway to a rental depot.

You would be doing your patients a better service to go to the ILCA.org web
site and look a listing of IBCLC's in your area that do private practice and
get a hold of your local LLL and get the local central number and call to get
the local group meeting days and locations and print it up to give to your
departing Breastfeeding moms than giving out the 1 800 number for
Breastfeeding help

-- also if your hospital rents pumps and it is not 24/7 call the tell you
number (or the ameda 800 number) for your local zip codes in your area and
find out which pump depots are open when you are not -- and which ones have
IBCLC or LLL help available. This will be much more helpful to keep your
moms Breastfeeding in the long run -- you do the leg work (it takes just a
few minutes every couple of months to update the list) and it saves stressed
parents tons of time running around. Believe me the parents remember who was
really helpful when all is said and done.

I will get off my soap box now.

ONE OF THE VERY FEW PRIVATE PRACTICE IBCLC'S LEFT IN MY NECK OF THE WOODS --
and I refer out to the others that I know of whenever I can -- there is more
than enough moms that need our help we need to work together.
