Among other things, in describing the mom's situation, Becky states:
"At 3 months, her nipples stick
crack open and bleed even on the lowest setting of the pump. "
The work "stick" jumped out at me. I notice with some moms, if the
flange "grabs" the breast and doesn't allow any tissue movement
within the flange, additional stress is put on the tissue that's
trying to heal and may be a factor in creating some soreness in the
first place. Sometimes, she may be pressing the flange into her
breast too hard. In many cases, I find it helps for mom to lightly
moisten the inside of the flange with a few drops of expressed milk
and gently press the flange against the breast (with even pressure
all around) just enough to assure a seal. The few drops of moisture
allows the breast tissue to slide in and out a little in the flange
with each "suck" and in many cases, comfort is increased greatly.
