Dear Friends:
Yes, there are reports of disease being transmitted through a pump. I
don't have the details; I remember seeing a report written somewhere and I
have also heard it from several prominent LCs.
Pumps for purchase lack the closed filtration systems of the hospital
grade or rental pumps. The manufucturer's warranties against injury do not
apply to a single-user pump used by someone other than the first mother.
Even if there weren't case reports, a theoretical risk of this magnitude
should be avoided, shouldn't it? It would not help breastfeeding in the least
to have a case of disease transmission, such as hepatitis, through a pump.
     Warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI, CCE, craniosacral therapy
