Subject: [LACTNET] WHO growth charts versus Industry
<...>While they may or may not be used, we can get the
word out that breastfed babies grow differently and need to be evaluated
differently!<...>
The fact is if babies aren't breastfed, they are 25% more likely to be
overweight or obese. (see the Cochrane Collaborative) Knowing that babies grow
differently, depending on how they are fed is the key fact to get out to the
public.<...>

Dear friends,

These charts are not meant for use with breastfed children only, but are to
been seen as *universal* standards for healthy grows in children. That
means that children who do not get breastfed need to be closely monitored in order to see that they fit within these norms. Probably
that will mean that the calculations for daily intake of formula will
to be reviewed, because they will appear to be overfed.

I have kind o a new pet-item here, as in my corner of the world the WHO charts are usually referred to as "the breastfeeding charts". It is a pity for the industry that this may mean that children do consume less of their products; they will indeed not like it at all.

Warmly,

Gonneke, IBCLC, LLLL in southern Netherlands
