Hi! Got a call from a Pediatrics at local hospital. Term baby 4 weeks old,
had surgery on 3/15 for repair of ASD & PDA(had transposition of vessels).
Did well, baby nursing well, then 8 days postop developed a
chylothorax(leaking fat into the thorax?). Surgeon's want to put baby on
portagen(no fat formula?) for 6 weeks. Mom is able to pump with double pump
12-15 oz per pumping. What can we do to support the breastfeeding? Surgeon
is open to suggestions. I suggested until I heard from you all, on wise
ones, that she put the baby skin to skin as much as possible. The nurse who
called me suggested that she put the baby to breast after she pumped, but I
thought that the baby would get the high fat content milk. What about
putting the baby on the breast for 2 to 3 minutes each side before the
pumping? The concern is that baby will not go back to breast after 6 weeks.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
