I have noticed many posts describing babies who have difficulty obtaining milk
from the breast even when the supply is good. Some babies outgrow this and
respond to many of our suggestions to remedy the problem. Some babies just
need to clear labor medications from their body and wake up. However, if this
problem persists it might be more helpful to refer the baby to a speech and
language pathologist, a physicial therapist, or an occupational therapist who
have been developmentally trained, so they may conduct a more thorough
assessment.

Poking around in a baby's mouth without knowing what you are looking for or
seeing can exacerbate and prolong the problem. Consulting with a person in one
of these disciplines is a learning experience and often picks up subtle
neurological abberations that have presented as a feeding problem. This allows
us to facilitae better care of the whole baby.
