I also had this experience recently. The parents had Tri-care, which
wouldn't refer to the one experienced pediatrician in our area, but only
to an ENT. The ENT's office said the doc was experienced, but when we
got there, we learned that he had never done a frenotomy on a child less
than one year of age. Nevertheless, he was quite confident to do it.
Very different technique: had dad hold baby upright, doctor administered
light local anesthetic to area, isolated tongue (not as well as I can!),
and then did one quick, deep cut. My local pediatrician would have been
slower, shallower, and more deliberate, and would have only cut further
in if the first cut didn't seem enough. The ENT was aggressive by
comparison, there was a lot of bleeding and use of gauze, and then he
cauterized. I've seen several frenotomies and never much blood until
this one-- it seemed much more invasive than necessary to me, but I'm
not the expert.
