The video is called "Delivery Self-Attachment" and is short and effective,
just as Kathleen says. It's also fairly affordable and excellent for
classes. It makes two points: one is about maternal labor medications, the
other about separation after birth. The latter is applicable for virtually
all birth situations. The applicability of the epidural part depends a bit
on what medications are actually given. The video doesn't say which ones
were used in their study, and of course you can give pretty much the whole
gamut from practically nothing right up to a Mack truck (like Christine's
mom). At Cottage Hospital where I work, they do a minimal epidural, aiming
for the mother to still have some discomfort but find it bearable, and they
use fentanyl. Also they won't give the epidural before 4 cm or after (I
think) 7 or 8 cm. Unless the mom ended up with more than their usual dose,
I actually find the babies do pretty well. I am sure there are some that
are groggier than they should be, but it's not at all like what I hear from
some hospitals.
The other point the video makes is also worth remembering: if that mom was
dopey with meds for a long time, I bet the baby was not skin to skin with
her during that time. So, separation was also an issue.
