The proceedure that I am going to have approved this week states that mothers
are to wash their pump parts with hot, soapy dish detergent. The next
sentence states that castile soap is approved. We went with castile soap because it
can be obtained in those small, "ketchup-like" packets which are essentially a
one time use per packet. We were also told that the mothers needed to rinse
in sterile water because of "hospital germs" in the water. This was approved by
our epidemiology department for use in our 4 NICUs, of which 2 are Level 3. I
wish we could use the quick steam bags from Medela but our epidemiology
department is telling us that until they are approved for institional use, we
cannot use them.
