hi Stacy,

When I was preparing for Baby Friendly site inspection in 1997, we tried to get "clean" DC packs, i.e., packs that had no ads or coupons for formula, bottles, or pacifiers. We got 1 or 2 shipments of packs that passed muster, but then we got more of the standard ones. The company would not pay to have the standard packs shipped back to them, so we kept them and removed all of the offending items.

Eventually we decided that gift packs were not a necessity. We realized that we as health workers wanted to have something to hand out to moms, even though that may not be in the mom's best interest. In our materialist culture, it takes an adjustment for us as health workers, as well as for the new parents, to know that babies do not need lots of consumer goods, they only need their parents' loving arms.

Subject: Re: Hospital Discharge Packs that Support Breastfeeding

Dear Katherine,

I didn't consider the possibility that the formula companies would give away a purposely defective breast pump in order to "come to the rescue" with their product. What a depressing (and anger provoking) thought. Perhaps I am not cynical enough or perhaps I am merely naive. So maybe one of the breast pump companies should start giving out discharge packs. Which brings up a question: What do you at Baby Friendly institutions (how lucky you are!) do about the gift packs?
