Hello, All!

I usually lurk, but now am asking for your collective wisdom and experience
on a situation that I can't figure out. With her permission, here's the
mom's story:

Baby girl was born on July 8th, unmed, uncomplicated vag delivery. Nursed
immediately and did very well for the first 4 weeks. Nothing but breast
given. Breastfeeding comfortably. Mom has hx of Raynauds syndrome and
cervical cancer.

10 days ago mom noted a tender, reddened area on the right breast, about 4
cms in diameter. Mom had no fever, chills, flu-like symptoms. Tried warm
compresses, massage with no relief.
After 3 days she went to her bf-supportive ob and took a 7 day course of
abx, with no relief of pain. Pain is worse when breasts are full and latch
on is excruciating, and breast is still tender after feeding.

Blanching and pain in both nipples after feeding and showering (Raynauds
rearing it's ugly head.)

Left breast is fine, except for raynauds. No breast pain, redness, etc.

After no improvement with abx, mom had ultrasound. No abscess seen, no
plugged ducts seen. Mom has had a cyst on that side for the past 2 years,
which looked only slightly larger. Two ob's are stumped. (So am I)

Baby is thriving, peeing, pooping, gaining weight, nursing every 2 or so
hours.

Mom has no red flags for yeast infection, whatsoever. No dry (eczema) areas.
I've looked in Newman's, Lawrence's, and Riordan's books and can't seem to
come up with anything.

Anybody ever dealt with something similar? Anybody have any ideas? I'd
appreciate it if you could email me privately as this mom, who is a real
trooper, is getting desperate and really worried.

Thanks in advance!

Hope it's cooler where you all are, we're supposed to hit 98 degrees in New
Jersey today!

Angie
