The copyright is 90-91, so some info may not have been available when book
was written. I think the stats (we are aware of) deal with pre-menopausal
breast cancer and are favorable if you BF for long periods of time :) like 6
mo or a year :).

There are some other inaccuracies in the chapter on BF. ie: BF adopted baby
- mom makes a "kind of pre-milk fluid, which can provide a small amount of
nutrition to the child." She does discuss that once you've had a pg, you
can elicit a milk supply anytime in the future. She discusses oxytocin and
prolactin, nothing about autocrine control. Wishy washy on BF contraceptive
effect. Poor advice on nipple prep and shields, sore nipples. Her
discussion of breast vs bottle is also wishy-washy. But does talk about
"fashions" in infant feeding and guilt.

She includes resources for BF help (but slams LLLI as "very zealous", not
best resource if you are ambivalent", but then goes on to say "get
catalog"), personal and friends experiences with BF, good info on lumps and
biopsy while BF.

And lastly, we need to remember that this isn't a book about BF, it is a
book about breast cancer, and I wouldn't expect it to be super accurate on
BF with her sample of one (a BF daughter). Perhaps we could provide her with
research articles to help shape up her next edition! or suggest she
collaborate for that chapter!

Another topic: had a mom today with a 3 week old, 1st ped vss, who is
pumping and waiting for her nipples to heal :( (ref her to her WIC BF
counselor).
That and Susan Love's ref list made me think of what Chris Mulford says a
mom needs to know before she goes home from the hospital.

1. How-to get the baby on and off so it doesn't hurt.
2. How-to know if baby is getting "enough".
3. Where to get help, if having trouble with the first 2.

This list is simple, easy to give out and should be used in every postpartum
unit in the world! (To Peaches - espec. ACMC :)
