Hi Christine, I haven't had the same experience. Two examples follow.
Both these moms sought prenatal help by the way.

I've had several very hard working moms who followed through after breast
reductions. One breastfed exclusively for 6 months but had pain at the
areolar suture lines when she latched the baby deeply. When she latched
shallowly she had the usual nipple pain. With experimentation she found the
depth of latch that worked best for her, not quite as deep as we would
usually like but deep enough to avoid trauma. She purchased a SNS
prenatally and wound up donating it to her birthing center, never needed to
use it.

The other had no problem with the latch and suture line pain but did have
insufficient milk to fully nourish her infant. We used a SNS from the
first week, playing with flow to maximize stimulation. She went on to
breastfeed with the SNS providing about 50% of baby's calories for months.
She had about 3 or 4 clinic visits, never missed one.
