Hi All,
This is a mom I have been working with for a while. Baby born 9-23-07. Had
some real tummy issues that we finally tracked down to dairy (gassy,
spitty). Mom discontinued dairy and things got better.
Currently, baby is having some blood in her stools. Dr told mom today to
stop BF for 1 week and put baby on formula to see if there is something in
the breastmilk that is causing the issue. I about flipped. I calmly told
her no - please do NOT stop BF - if there is something going on with baby's
gut then putting ABM in it certainly will not make it better and could make
it worse, AND baby LOVES BF and hasn't been on a bottle in months. The
thought of those two not nursing is distressing to both mom and me. The
emotional distress for baby and mom is something I Just don't want to even
think about.
So, I asked mom to write it all down so I could present to you all and see
what you think. Obviously I have permission to post. Any input is welcome.

Here is the rest of her story.
Ok Jaye, I am not sure exactly what you need, but here is what I think
you need, and then if you need more let me know.
As you know on December 1st, I went on the elimination diet -- eating
only lamb, turkey, rice, rice milk, squash and pears.
On December 19th, went to the doctor because there was blood in the
stool (not a lot, only a little). The doctor determined it to be from a
fissure, which was easily visible. After 2 days there was no more blood
in stool.
On January 9th, blood appears again in the form of flecks. Was not
concerned, figured it was the fissure again. It continued. On January
11th, went to doctor again who figured it was again the fissure, again
easily visible. The doctor did perform a culture on her stool for an
intestinal troubles and it came back negative.
Since January 9th, the new foods added to my diet has been: apple, bread
(sourdough, wheat and French), mayo, mustard, carrots, and tomato. I
also ate some soup (which I made) that did have onions in it. I only
ate it once because it smelled so good and I was hungry and I wanted to
take a chance on the onions, after all they were cooked. Oh, and from
time to time I have had root beer. Other than that, I only drink water.
From the 9th through the 20th of January there has been a stooly diaper
with blood. She has been averaging 3 poopy diapers a day. The blood
has been in the form of flecks mostly, with a few threads. She is in no
obvious pain, is gaining weight, has 2-3 poopy diapers a day and 5-8 wet
diapers a day. She is happy and developing well.
On January 20th she had a poopy diaper in the early evening. It had
more blood in it than usual (although still not a lot). It was mostly
"threads" not flecks, although there were a few of those too. Since
that time there has been no visible blood in her stool, although a
"guac" (?) test performed on here diaper came back positive for blood,
meaning there is some microscopic blood there.
I think that about covers it. Let me know if you have any questions, or
if there is any more info that you need.
Thanks so much. I was so distraught at having to stop breastfeeding,
even for a week. Unfortunately, it didn't really hit me until after we
had left the doctor's office. I understand what my doctor is trying to
do and I don't have a problem with it. I think that you are right
though, in pursuing this other avenue first and see what happens.
