Hi Pat,
If at all possible, I would see if this mom would go for a professional 1:1
consultation (well it would be 2:1 counting the baby!) with you. Because of
this being her 3rd baby, and having 2 young children to care for (does she
homeschool for example?), she might be responding differently to this baby.
Is this baby a girl after 2 boys for example? Several moms have told me
they noticed a big difference in that the boys really vigorously nursed but
the girl was kind of slow. Was this baby an early term or late preterm
infant? What are the sleeping arrangements and night feedings like?
The other thing would be genetic or metabolic issues, but only after
assessing that the basics of breastfeeding "management" and production were
in place.
You might have a private conversation with mom, saying that it is obvious
she values bf, is concerned about wt, and (occasionally one will see this)
the doctor possibly would "order" bf to stop, supplements to start, and
child protection to look into case if not compliant. All this could be
averted with good consultation that you could report your findings to the
doctor.
